I bought the (great lakes) Navionics app for $10 and it appears to do all the things the $600 Garmin unit (at my local West Marine) could do. The iphone is MUCH easier to navigate.

this app has a very big gps lag. it rarely puts me right on the spot. i will be buying a real gps system for the boat.

Well, don’t bet your life on the position. When diving you want to be on the reef not “near” it. The maps feature that comes with the Iphone is right on. Why isn’t this one?

Absolutely awesome! It was tough for me to drop the $60 for an app, but after using it all weekend at Lake Amistad, I can say it’s well worth the cash.
